夫婦とは何かを考えさせられる一冊。『異類婚姻譚』📚by 本谷有希子
『異類婚姻譚』本谷有希子 この小説では、夫婦の離婚話がデフォルメして展開される。また、姥捨山を思わせるような長年飼った猫を山に捨ててくる場面も登場する。夫婦とは何か、家族とは何かを考えさせる物語で、克明な表情の描写も素晴らしいし、感情の揺れを見事に捉えている。一気に最後まで読み終えた。小説は「ある日、自分の顔が旦那の顔とそっくりになっていることに気が付いた。」という一文で始まる。主人公夫婦は結婚４年目で、どんどん顔が似てくる。主人公の夫はだらしがなく、毎日バラエティ番組を３時間みなければ気が済まない人物。顔が弛緩し切っており、最後にはもはや人間の顔ではなくなっていく。それを非難していた主人公もどんどん夫と同じ顔になっていき、それを知人から指摘される。「あなたはもう少し、ちゃんと人の形をしてたかなあ。」 そして圧巻の最後。今まで本気で向き合ってこなかった夫婦が、本音の核心に触れる。その結果、夫が山芍薬になり、それを主人公が山に植えて終わる。なるほど。ぱっとしない怠惰な旦那がマチュピチュに旅行に行った時、生き生きとしていたのは、元々人間ではなく、山芍薬だったからなのか。 「これほど近くにいながら、毎日寝起きを共にしながら、私は彼が一輪の山芍薬になりたがっていたことなど、露も知らなかった。」 長年付き添った夫婦でも本当に相手が何を望んでいるのか、わからない時もあるであろう。考えさせられる一文だ。 この小説には、自分の顔が石に反映されたり、蛇が共食いして頭と頭だけになる蛇ボールなるものも登場する。本のタイトル通り、人間と動物が婚姻関係を結ぶ昔話は古今東西存在する。それの現代版とも言える小説だが、不気味な怖さを含めて魅力的な一冊。

Yukiko Motoya is a writer who has received varied prestigious literary prizes including the Akutagawa Prize, Oe Kenzaburo Prize, and Mishima Yukio Prize. She is not only a writer but also organizes her own theater company.
As the title of the novel indicates, there have been many sorts of folktales where a human being and an animal get married. The protagonist and her husband have been married for more than 3 years. Their faces come to resemble each other’s more and more. Her husband is a lazy and banal person and cannot live without spending at least 3 hours sitting in front of TV. Because of that habit, his face becomes so loose that in the end it ceases to look like a face of a human being. Although the protagonist always criticizes him for his inertia and passivity, her face also gradually gets to resemble his. An old man, who is an acquaintance of the protagonist, once points it out to her, saying that her face used to have a more human feature.
The protagonist and her husband never share their true feelings with each other and when they finally face each other seriously, the husband becomes a peony flower. The novel ends with the protagonist’s planting it in the mountain.
I was impressed with her technique of interweaving in her story the aspect of the tradition of marriage to a different sort. She added a twist to what would become a typical divorce story otherwise. Needless to say, this novel made me think about marriage and family. This is definitely worth a read.
