『６０歳からの外国語修行』青山南
著者はケルアックの『路上』の翻訳者でもある青山南氏。６０歳にして、大学のサバディカル制度を使って、１年弱メキシコに語学留学に出かける顛末記。メキシコの魅力も散りばめられているし、語学は何歳から始めても学ぶ価値があるのだと思わせてくれる良書。
この新書を通じてガレアーノの『収奪された大地』を知った。あのベネズエラのチャベス大統領がオバマ大統領に読むようにと勧めた本である。また、印象深い一節にも出会った。 “Poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the United States.” アメリカの一番の産業はアメリカに出稼ぎに行くことだという。
去年初めてメキシコを訪れた。カンクンで出会ったメキシコ人の家族の優しさ、人懐っこしさが印象に残っている。なぜだかメキシコの人達に親近感を覚えてしまうのは僕だけだろうか？タクシーを何台か乗り継いだが、運転手が皆紳士的で、優しい人達だった。やはり旅の醍醐味は現地の人達との交流である。
１つだけ心残りはフリーダ・カーロの美術館に入れなかったこと。いつかスペイン語を少しだけでも習得し、再訪したい。
Minami Aoyama “Studying Spanish from the age of 60”
The author is the translator of “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac. Making the most of his sabbatical year of his university where he is a lecturer, he decides to go to Mexico for about a year to study Spanish at language schools. The charms of Mexico are scattered all over the book and I realize again that however late you start studying a new language, it will always pay off in many ways.
I came across a very memorable phrase “Poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the Unite States.” Some Mexican in this book says that the biggest industry of Mexico is going to the United States to be a migrant worker. Through this book, I knew “Open Veins of Latin America” by Eduardo Galeano, which I read while in Mexico last year.
I visited Mexico for the first time last year. I will never forget the kindness of a Mexican family we met in Cancun and the gentleness of taxi drivers we talked to in Mexico City. Somehow, I felt very close to Mexican people.
The only thing I regret now is the fact that we were not able to go to Frida Kahlo’s museum. When I’ve mastered some phrases in Spanish, I do want to visit Mexico again. It was such a beautiful country.
