“Japanophone Taiwanese, That’s What I Am!”by Wen Yuju

This book makes me ponder important questions. What is a country? What are languages? Her native tongue is neither Japanese nor Mandarin Chinese. She was born in Taiwan and raised in Japan. She vacillates among three languages of Mandarin, Japanese, and Taiwanese, through which she has acquired her true self and her own language. She calls it “Nihongo” in Katakana characters with affection. Whenever her mother spoke Japanese, which was not her first language, the author really hated that at first because of its bizarre accent. However, she gradually came to embrace it all the more for that peculiarity because she could see her mother’s mother tongue behind it.
