“Things Fall Apart” 📚by Chinua Achebe
When I was studying at SOAS, I was introduced a book which is a seminal work of Chinua Achebe. “Things Fall Apart”, that is.
Achebe depicts Nigeria in the 1890s, alluding to the collapse of the African tribal system and disintegration of the British Empire. The title is taken from a poem by W.B.Yeats.
“Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world” (“The Second Coming”)
These phrases resonate even more strongly now.
I am now educating myself by reading James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and Chinua Achebe.
『崩れゆく絆』 チヌア・アチェベ
SOASで学んでいた時、Chinua Achebeを知った。ナイジェリアのイボ人作家で、アフリカ文学の父と呼ばれている。ナイジェリアではハウサ、ヨルバ、イボが三大民族（もちろん、他にも様々な民族がおり、その数は２５０以上）とされている。それだけ取ってもナイジェリアが多様性に満ちていることがわかる。もちろん、「アフリカ」を一括りにすることなどできない。邦題は『崩れゆく絆』。アメリカで起こっていることを少しでも俯瞰して捉えられるよう、James Baldwin、Toni Morrison、Malcolm Xを読み始めた。この機会にアチェベも再読しよう。
