来週の授業では、三島由紀夫の『女方』を扱う。日、英で再読した。１９５７年初出、三島由紀夫３２歳である。英訳はドナルド・キーン。まず、なんと言っても三島由紀夫の文体に惹かれる。短編ということもあり、読みやすく、３人の登場人物の複雑な感情の揺れが美しく描写されている。
歌舞伎の世界は全く知らないが、万菊が象徴する女方の冷艶さ、「舞台で放つ冷たい焔のようなもの」に魅了された。女性の言葉と身のこなしを日常的に貫いているからこそ、その仮の日常が仮の舞台を支えている。
その万菊に高校生から憧れ、遂に歌舞伎の世界に足を踏み入れる知識人、増山。万菊に対する幻滅を求めてその世界に入ったにも関わらず、その願いは容易に叶うことはない。計らずも予期せぬ展開で味合うことになるが、それは嫉妬という新しい感情への幕開けを意味していた。
２人の間に登場するのは新劇の演出家、川崎。純粋で若さを体現している川崎。歌舞伎の伝統の世界に新風を吹かせようとするが、激しい反発を受ける。唯一の例外は万菊で、彼のみ川崎の指示通りに演技を行う。徐々に川崎に惹かれる万菊。その思いとは裏腹にその意図を侮蔑と解釈する川崎。
「女方こそ、夢と現実との不倫の交わりから生まれた子なのである」
「この世界では技術を伴わない学問などは、三文の値打ちもないのである」
「女方の色気というものは、或る瞬間の一点の目の仄めきだけが、それだけ独立して、女をひらめかせるものであった」
三島由紀夫の人物描写の素晴らしさ、修辞の秀逸さ、日本の伝統美に触れることができるお薦めの短編。ドナルド・キーンの英訳も見事で、原文に忠実であることを心掛けているのが容易に見て取れる。
“Onnagata” by Mishima Yukio
Next week, we are going to read and discuss “Onnagata” by Mishima Yukio. This work was written when he was 32. It is translated by Donald Keene, who is one of the most renowned translators together with Edward Seidensticker.
This story unfolds around the protagonist Mangiku (which means ten thousand chrysanthemums), a Kabuki actor and onnagata. He gives off “icy frames” which enchant and mesmerize the audience.
The intellectual Masuyama enters the unfamiliar Kabuki world which is full of traditions and old customs. His aim is to be near Mangiku and feel disillusioned by witnessing his daily life behind the scenes. In the end, he experiences the sense of disenchantment in an unexpected way, leading to a new emotion of jealousy with which he was not afflicted before.
Another important character is Kawasaki, who is a young and experimental stage director. Since he has lived in a totally different world from that of Kabuki, he takes flak from Kabuki actors with Mangiku being the only exception, acting exactly the way he is told to by Kawasaki. Mangiku is drawn gradually to Kawasaki while he despises Mangiku solely out of his own egoism and wrong interpretations.
I would strongly recommend this short story to anyone who is interested either in Mishima or in Kabuki. Needless to say, Mishima Yukio is one of the writers of cardinal importance in the contemporary Japan. The English translation is excellent as well. You can enjoy Mishima’s distinctive style and rhetoric as well as the introduction to the Japanese traditional culture!
