This is an unpublished short story of Ernest Hemingway in the New Yorker.
I went to Havana last year and visited Hemingway’s house. I missed a chance to drink the famous daiquiri at Floridita. His house was gorgeous and pretty. He wrote “The Old Man and the Sea” while in Cuba. I miss the tasty Cuban omelettes and the unrivaled Varadero Beach.
ヘミングウェイの未発表の作品が見つかったという。ニューヨーカーで早速読む。題名はpursuit of happiness（幸福の追求）の言葉遊びで、『幸福としての追求』。ここでは釣りという行為の追求そのものが幸福と等しいという意味であろう。
去年念願のハバナを訪れた。多くの人達と同じく、ヴェンダースのブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブに魅了されていた。もちろんモーターサイクル・ダイアリーズにも。
とにかく、別世界であった。どこもかしこもカストロとゲバラのポスターばかり。個人的にはどことなく寂しげな笑顔を浮かべていた女の子とキューバ風オムレツが印象に残っている。バラデロのビーチの美しさは比類がなかった。
そしてヘミングウェイの家も訪れた。瀟洒な界隈にあり、素敵な家だった。蔵書を見て感動した。唯一の心残りはヘミングウェイが足繁く通ったとされるフロリディータであの有名なダイキリを飲めなかったこと。次回はきっと“Frozen daiquiri without sugar.”と注文してみせる。
完全にミーハーですね。。
